WINCHESTER — Brock Whipkey's RBI single with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the James Wood baseball team a 4-3 win over Musselman (West Virginia) in the final game of the Battle of the Borders tournament on Thursday at Shenandoah University's Bridgeforth Stadium.

The Colonels — who went 2-0 in the tournament and won their sixth straight game to improve to 8-2 overall — trailed 3-0 after the Applemen (0-2 in the tournament) scored twice in the top of the sixth inning.

In the sixth, Owen Neal (two runs, walk) hit a leadoff double, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Whipkey (2 for 3, two RBIs). The next four batters reached safely — three on walks — with a walk to Cade Cornwell bringing in Parker Kerns to make it 3-2.

In the seventh, Zach Woskobunik (2 for 4, double) led off with a triple, Neal walked, and Logan Bower (2 for 4) tied the game with an RBI double that scored Woskobunik and moved Neal to third. That set the stage for Whipkey, who singled to left on a 3-2 pitch.

Whipkey started and pitched six innings. He allowed three runs (one earned), five hits and no walks and struck out three batters. Brady Smith pitched a shutout seventh in which he allowed no hits, one walk and struck out one batter. Also for Wood, Jacob Woskobunik walked twice.
