WINCHESTER — Sam Jackson raced home on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth inning as James Wood outlasted Orange County 3-2 in the Region 4D baseball tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday at R. Charles Hott Field.

The North second-seeded Colonels (13-8) will host No. 4 Charlottesville (9-12) on Friday in the semifinals. The Black Knights upset North top seed Sherando 2-1 in eight innings.

Pinch-hitter Jackson singled to center to open the ninth, swiped second and moved to third on a one-out balk. After Coby Nesselrodt was then intentionally walked, Jackson scored on the passed ball with Parker Kerns at the plate.

The Colonels led 2-1 heading to the seventh but Orange County tied the score with an unearned run. James Wood trailed 1-0 after giving up a first-inning run, but tied the score on Deuce Strosnider's RBI groundout in the third. They took the lead in the fifth on John Copenhaver's RBI single.

Logan Bower dominated in two hitless innings of relief with six strikeouts and one walk. Starter Garett McAlexander pitched seven innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) with no walks and five strikeouts.

Copenhaver (double) and Nesselrodt each had two hits for James Wood, a state semifinalist last season.
