WINCHESTER — James Wood scored eight times on just two hits in the first inning as the Colonels topped Clarke County in six innings.

James Wood took advantage of four walks, four errors and two hit batsmen in the inning. Cameron Gross had a two-run single and Samuel Ellingsworth had a RBI single in the inning.

James Wood’s Tyler Matthews went 1 for 2 with two runs scored, and Cameron Eback’s RBI single scored Chuck Simmers with the the game-clinching run.

That proved plenty for Colonels pitchers Joel Smith and Gross. Smith allowed three hits and one run, struck out six and walked two over four innings. Gross allowed a hit and a walk and struck out one in two scoreless innings of relief.

Zach Melusen had three of the Eagles’ four hits and drove in their lone run.
