WINCHESTER — Joel Smith gave up two earned runs in 52/3 innings and had an RBI double in the sixth inning to lift James Wood to a season-opening win over Hampshire (W.Va.) on Thursday night at R. Charles Hott Field.

Smith (1 for 3 with a walk) gave up five hits and struck out five batters for the Colonels. With a 3-0 lead, Smith gave up two runs in the sixth before giving way to Cameron Gross with two outs and no one on. Gross allowed one hit in 11/3 shutout innings to earn the save.

Also for James Wood — which scored two runs in the first, one in the second and had eight hits — Eli Warren went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs, and Ben Russo went 2 for 3 with a walk and a run.
