WINCHESTER — Greg Van Sickler was named Shenandoah University’s male Athlete of the Year as the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored 46 student-athletes Tuesday night at its second Senior Awards Dinner.
Van Sickler joined Katie Haskins, who was named the female athlete of the year, in winning departmental major honors for the second consecutive year.
Van Sickler, who was named both to the All-USA South squad and All-Tournament teams in baseball this spring, was male Rookie of the Year in 2008. This season, the former James Wood High School standout leads the Hornets in runs batted in at the plate and victories on the mound.
Haskins, who completes her career holding every major pitching record in softball, was named as the female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. She again repeated as the USA South Conference Pitcher of the Year this spring and was named All-USA South at two different positions.
Freshmen Amy Smith and Kyle Gutierrez were honored as the female and male Rookie Athletes of the Year, respectively.
Smith and Gutierrez, both members of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field teams, each earned first team All-USA South honors in cross country and grabbed All-MAC honors in February following their performances at the MAC Indoor Championships.
Smith was also named as the USA South Conference Rookie of the Year in women’s cross country and earned All-Region honors in that sport as well.
Scott Lambert was honored as the male Student-Athlete of the Year, and Renee Summerson and Catherine Beuerle shared the honor on the women’s side.
Lambert, who holds a 3.45 grade-point average as a Kinesiology major, earned honorable mention All-USA South honors at catcher this season as he has helped the baseball team to a school-record 33 wins and a No. 18 national ranking.
Summerson and Beuerle have nearly identical credentials — both have been named ESPN The Magazine first team Academic All-America in 2008 and earned honorable mention All-USA South honors in their final seasons in an SU uniform.
Summerson has a perfect 4.0 GPA in her second year as a Doctor of Pharmacy student while did the same as a Doctor of Physical Therapy student.
Summerson was named All-USA South in soccer in her final three seasons, and Beuerle matched that in softball. |
